We have benefited from significant Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) investment in Active Travel over the last year or so.



Through this, we’ve been able to refurbish an old building on Grimsby Town station, converting it into a community interest cycle hub offering bike storage, maintenance, information and hire.

In addition, our Move More Through Active Travel officers are working with schools, community groups and workplaces to promote cycling and other sustainable travel modes. We’re setting up a Bike Buddy system, where our staff will ride a route (perhaps one to work) with a new cyclist to help them grow in confidence.



We also successfully ran a Workplace Cycle Challenge this year. More than 1,100 people signed up, nearly a third of whom were new cyclists. And we have participated in the SkyRide initiative with British Cycling.



Over 95 per cent of local primary schools have Bikeability training supported by an ongoing programme of new and improved cycle parking facilities at targeted schools. Tollbar Academy, for example, has a huge bike shed that can store 400 bicycles – watching all the kids ride out as a wave of cyclists at home time is 
really amazing.



We’re waiting for official figures to come through, but as an estimate, I’d think that cycling rates in the region are up three or four per cent this year, and that’s on top of a similar rise we saw in 2012. It’s massively encouraging that we’re already beginning to see mainstream acknowledgement among local people that cycling is a realistic transport option.
