2013 rider finish times >>

Sunday October 6 2013

Fitz Park, Keswick, Lake District, Cumbria

Mini Massif
44 miles, £25

Massif 62 Miles, £35

Cycling Weekly’s Lakeland Monster Miles adventure cross is a non-competitive event that is ideal for cyclo-cross or mountain bikes, it features a mixture of on and off-road terrain that offers something different to the seasoned road sportive rider.

TheLake District route, starting and finishing in Keswick, is both picturesque and challenging, offering something for everyone. The route is a mix of bridleways, flowing trails, tracks and minor mainly traffic free lanes showing off the full range of what the Lakes have to offer and circumnavigating the Skiddaw Massif.

It’s a fantastic course for a ‘cross bike, although a hard-tail mountain bike would be equally suitable, it takes you to places and offers views inaccessible by road.

There are two routes, the Massif – 100km (62 miles) with 46.3km of the route off-road and the Mini Massif – a shorter 71km (44 miles) with 30km off-road. Click on the map below to view the exact routes.

Due to the constantly changing scenery and the shifts in the terrain the ride goes by remarkably quickly as each new section throws up a new challenge or a spectacular view.

Unlike many other long distance cross events, most notably the Three Peaks, the entire route is possible on the bike, no need to get off and run with your bike on your shoulder.

Watch the intro video clip below to get more of a feel for the event.

I bought a cross bike in April, thought i would give this a go!! this being my first ever cycling event at the age of 59, talk about throwing yourself in the deep end. It was harder than i thought it would be but i loved every minute of this punishing course. the marshalls where great they encouraged you along the way, it was well signed posted and well run!!! a 10 out of 10 from me!!
when are the pictures coming out?

  • Dave

We had a great day. It was relaxed, fun, well organised and had a great atmosphere……many thanks to the event organisers, marshals and the rest of the support team without whom it would have not happened.

I’m also glad to see that the feeding stations recognised the restorative qualities of custard creams and chocolate bourbons, a fact that will be embraced on the shopping trips of the future.

  • harry binns

  • John

I would like to add that this was an excellent event that was well run and organised throughout. Special thanks to Gareth the grizzled bike maestro who was quite brilliant in helping my cycling mate get around the course. Great cup of tea at the end. Next year we will not do this on road bikes!

  • Seb

Don’t know where to start nor what to add… Amazing event. Big Thanks to everyone. I travelled from London for this event and really enjoyed every single moment.
As said before, very well marshalled and sign posted. Excellent atmosphere.
Will be back next year for the long route!

  • bruce

Good event and very well run, thanks to all especially the Marshalls.

Any chance next year we could’ve had a bit of the Blue on the way through Winlatter?

And where are the results online?

  • Terry Gilfillan

What a great event. I can’t fault it – a template for all to copy. A great course, very well marshalled and sign posted. Well done Cycling Weekly and anyone else who helped to organise it. I’m sure my buddies and I will be back next year (hopefully with some better legs).

  • Andy Mills

Where are the web results hiding?

  • Darren Hepworth

    Just to echo what martin has already said;

Big thank you to the organisers of the Lakeland Monster and a special mention to all the marshals who always wore a smile and had lots of words of encouragement (and the occasional cow bell) and lets not forget the great effort by the Keswick scouts.

I’ll be back next year to tackle this event again, better prepared from the experience.

  • Bruce Robertson

Entered this event, completed this event and enjoyed every mile of it (well maybe not while pedalling up the first climb lol)

  • martin stocks

today I took part in your sportive at the end I spoke of my day to the camera ……… I didn’t say thanks to all the people who marshalled this route as the weather was a bit hit and miss they all must have had rain and wind at some point and all still had a smile and a good word of encouragement for all thank you for that . as well as being the best sportive I have done this year and by best I mean very very well organised from start to finish i.e mechanical support, feed stations ,emergency support, bike wash, massage, even the tea lady who stood their all day I will be bringing more friends next year to this event . if you helped on this day this is for you…… THANK YOU…. and see you next year
