A participant on the London-Paris Cycle Tour died last Friday after an accident during the stage from Calais to Amiens.

The event continued after the death of Mr D’Agata, although the separate classifications were neutralised the following day. The three-day event started in Hampton Court on Thursday and finished in Paris on the Saturday.

A press release on the London Paris website read as follows:

On the afternoon of Friday 27 June 2008, a cyclist taking part in the London-Paris Cycle Tour was involved in an accident in which he sustained serious head injuries. No other cycle riders were involved in the accident.

Andy D’Agata, 44, from Surrey, was evacuated by French emergency services to a hospital in Lille for treatment. Sadly, despite continued care, he was unable to recover and died from his injuries on Saturday 28 June 2008.

The condolences of the L2P organisers, tour staff and all participating riders are extended to the family at this sad time.

All concerned in the organisation of L2P will continue to assist the authorities in all matters related to this tragic accident.
