Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) won the 2013 Volta a Catalunya on Sunday, successfully defending his overall lead in the race from last-minute attacks by rivals Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida).

Martin finished the race 17 seconds ahead of Rodriguez overall, with Scaponi moving up into third at 34 seconds. Bradley Wiggins (Sky) showed that his form is building ahead of his assault on the Giro d’Italia in May with fifth place at 54 seconds.

Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil-DCM) won the final stage from a four-man escape group that also contained Scarponi. Sky’s David Lopez was second, with Robert Kiserlovski (RadioShack-Leopard) in third.
