Alex Dowsett has broken his elbow as a result of a crash during the Three Days of West Flanders in Belgium at the weekend.

The Sky pro and British time trial champion had finished in 12th spot in the race’s opening prologue on Friday, and was in the top 20 overall when the crash happened.

Dowsett drove home to Britain and took a visit to Accident and Emergency on Monday morning after a painful night. X-rays revealed the fracture and he will undergo a corrective surgical procedure at Royal London Hospital. Dowsett posted a picture of himself heavily bandaged on Twitter.

Dowsett’s Sky team-mate Michael Rogers also crashed out of the race, which was eventually won overall by Arnaud Demare (FDJ-Big Mat).
