Junior road race world champion Lucy Garner is one of ten sports people on the shortlist for the 2011 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Garner joins Liam Broady (Tennis), Sally Brown (athletics), Tom Daley (diving), Jack Laugher (diving), Pat McCormack (boxing), Laura Robson (tennis), Eleanor Simmonds (swimming), Lauren Taylor (golf) and Anthony Watson (rugby union) on the list.

Garner won the junior women’s road race in Copenhagen in September after powering away from her rivals in the final 100 metres. Remarkably, the first-year junior from Leicester had crashed heavily on the first lap of the race, but quickly regained composure to take the win despite a deep cut to her knee.

Last year the Young SPOTY award went to Tom Daley for the third time. Previous winners include footballer Wayne Rooney and tennis player Andy Murray.

The winner will be announced during the BBC’s annual Sports Personality of the Year awards on December 22.

The shortlist for the senior title will be announced on Monday, November 28, during the One Show. Manxman Mark Cavendish is thought to be in with a strong chance of making the final ten after winning the green jersey at the Tour de France and taking the elite men’s road race title.

Nominations are put forward by a panel of 30 sports journalists. The winner is decided by public vote.

This year’s SPOTY award ceremony takes place at the BBC’s new studio at Media City UK, Salford Quays and will be broadcast live on BBC One.
