George Hincapie career profile

One of the best liked and longest serving members of the peloton, Hincapie came within a whisker of pulling on the yellow jersey at the 2009 Tour de France which would have been just reward for the New Yorker.

A key part of Lance Armstrong’s US Postal and Discovery teams, Hincapie was by the Texan’s side for all seven of his Tour victories, plus working for Alberto Contador in his 2007 winning ride. He has now been a finisher in 13 out of 14 Tour de France’s ridden and was a vital ingredient in Colombia’s lead-out train for Mark Cavendish in the last two Tours.

The tall American always makes his mark on the Spring Classics, winning Gent-Wevelgem in 2001 and achieving numerous top-ten placings in Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders.

Hincapie called time on his professional career in 2012, after admitting that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

“Because of my love for the sport, the contributions I feel I have made to it, and the amount the sport of cycling has given to me over the years, it is extremely difficult today to acknowledge that during a part of my career I used banned substances,” he wrote in an open letter published on his personal website.

“Early in my professional career, it became clear to me that, given the widespread use of performance enhancing drugs by cyclists at the top of the profession, it was not possible to compete at the highest level without them.”

Hincapie is married to former Tour de France podium girl Melanie Simonneau and has two children. He continues to be a part of the cycling world by heading his own clothing company, Hincapie Sportswear.
