Giacomo Nizzolo gave Trek Factory Racing its second consecutive victory in the 2014 Tour de San Luis, winning the bunch sprint at the end of stage three on Wednesday.

Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) hit the front of the bunch as they rounded the final bend and into the finish straight, to lead out team-mate Tom Boonen. In the event, Boonen came home in third, with Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) second – but neither could out-pace Swiss rider Nizzolo.

Phillip Gaimon (Garmin-Sharp) retained the overall race lead ahead of Marc De Maar (UnitedHealthcare) on another day of searing temperatures – with 41 degrees Celcius recorded at the finish.

Briton Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEdge) moved into the lead in the best young rider’s classification after finishing in the peloton.

Thursday’s fourth stage takes the riders from El Potrero de los Funes to the mountain-top finish at Alto del Amago, over a 168.7km route. On Friday the riders face a 19.2km test against the clock. The UCI 2.1-ranked Tour de San Luis concludes on Sunday, January 26.
