Belgian Philippe Gilbert has leapt to the top of the Union Cycliste Internationale’s Worldtour Ranking after winning Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege in the space of a week.

The Omega Pharma-Lotto rider now sits 120 points clear of second-placed Fabian Cancellara (Leopard-Trek) at the end of the Spring Classics. Australian Matt Goss (HTC-Highroad) is in third place.

Highest-placed British rider is Ben Swift (Sky) in 23rd place after winning two stages of the Tour Down Under and placing third overall in the Tour Down Under in January.

Belgium is in first place in the ranking-by-nation, with Cancellara and the Schleck brothers’ Leopard-Trek outfit taking the place of RadioShack as leading team.

The UCI’s world ranking is compiled using a points system, with points awarded for one-day race, tour stage and stage race overall finishing positions for events in the UCI’s Worldtour.

The amount of points awarded depends on the ranking of the event. For example, winning the Tour de France overall gives a rider twice as many points as winning the Eneco Tour overall.

The next counting event is the Tour de Romandie (April 26-May 1).
