Tour de France champion Sir Bradley Wiggins (Sky) takes to the start line of the 2013 Giro de Trentino in Italy on Tuesday in his preparations for an assault on the overall classification of the Giro d’Italia in May.

The Giro del Trentino is a UCI 2.HC-ranked four-day, five-stage race featuring four tough road stages and one 14.1km team time trial.

Tuesday’s opening day features a split stage: a morning road race, and an afternoon team time trial.

Wednesday’s second stage is the first of two that features a mountain-top finish, the second is the final stage on Friday which has a real sting in the tail with a 14.6km climb at an average of eight per cent.

Thursday’s stage is a hilly affair that may suit an escape or attack whilst the climbers and GC men take a breather between the two higher mountain stages.

Last year’s race was won by Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r), who returns to defend his title wearing the number one plate. Also present along with Pozzovivo and Wiggins are Grand Tour big hitters Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), Ivan Basso (Cannondale), Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) and Pierre Rolland (Europcar).

Great Britain is represented in the race by Wiggins, Peter Kennaugh (both Sky), Jonny McEvoy, Erick Rowsell (both NetApp-Endura) and Adam Blythe (BMC Racing).
