Emma Pooley remains in the leaders pink jersey after today’s fourth stage, won by Columbia Highroad’s Ina Teutenberg.

The Cervelo rider finished safely in the bunch seven seconds behind a lead group of 28 riders, with Pooley’s team-mate Kirsten Wild taking second, several lengths adrift of prolific sprinter Teutenberg.

“Most teams waited until the sprint and we were hoping Kirsten could win it, but it didn’t quite work,” said Pooley. “We did what we could. And I lost some seconds on the run-in, which was not good.”

Pooley remains 1’07” ahead of American Mara Abbott (Columbia Highroad) overall after a relatively uneventful day in the ten-stage race. “There were a few digs on the climb but the team controlled it really well,” said Pooley.

The Briton also leads the mountains classification for good measure, while Lizzie Armitstead (Lotto Belisol) remains in the white jersey at the head of the young rider classification.

Wednesday’s 106km stage runs from Fossacesia to Cerro al Volturno and features one third-category climb.
