Performance Bicycle, the big North Carolina sports retailer with outlets in 11 states, has become the first US sports store to use renewable energy to power its stores.

?Cycling is already the most environmentally friendly form of transportation, and now with our purchase of 100 percent renewable energy it just got even better,? said Garry Snook, chief executive of Performance Bicycle.

Making this switch will cut seven million pounds of carbon dioxide pollution each year, the equivalent to taking 618 cars off the road.

The company is offering free gift cards to customers who follow their lead and choose wind power for their homes.
