SECURING his fifth National 10-Mile Championship title, Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit RT) broke the course record at Sawtry, Cambridgeshire, but still only beat his nearest rival by just eight seconds.

Hutchinson clocked 19-43 to beat Jason MacIntyre (The Edge Racing Team) into second, while GB Olympic Academy rider Alex Dowsett (100 Per Cent ME) took third, another 19 seconds off the pace.

The In Gear RT rider had led throughout, reaching the turn in 10-09, while Dowsett was second at that stage, with 10-17. Although three seconds further back at that stage, MacIntyre overhauled Dowsett over the return leg, but could not catch Hutchinson.

Earlier in the day, national 50 champion Julia Shaw (GS Strada) had completed the course in 22-30 to notch up her first 10-mile title with a three second win over Joanna Rowsell (Global Racing).

The winner for the last two years, Wendy Houvenaghel (Science in Sport.com) was a non-starter, believed to be concentrating on her preparations for the World Championships in Stuttgart in September.

And in the junior event Andrew Griffiths (Glendene CC-Biketrax) clocked 21-27 to win by 11 seconds from In Gear?s Development Squad member Matthew Jones.
