Leipheimer wins 2009 Vuelta a Castilla y Leon

Levi Leipheimer Vuelta a Castilla y Leon 2009

Levi Leipheimer (Astana) added another stage race win to his 2009 palmares when he won the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon on Friday.

Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) triumphed in the bunch sprint at the end of the stage to Valladolid, giving the Spaniard his second stage victory in the race. Leipheimer safely came home in the main bunch at the same time as Valverde.

Tour of California winner Leipheimer took the race lead after blitzing the field in the stage two time trial, and maintained his time advantage through to Friday's final stage.

Leipheimer's team-mate Alberto Contador finished in second spot overall, with American David Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream) in third.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
