Liam Killeen took his maiden cyclo-cross senior title at a mud-soaked Shrewsbury Sports Village, while Nikki Harris came from behind to snatch the women’s title in dramatic finish.

The former Commonwealth Games Champion and Olympic mountain biker, riding for Specialized Cycles, left favourite and reigning champion Ian Field to settle for second.

The 33-year-old from Malvern made his move half way through the hour-long race, pulling away each lap to win by 30 seconds.

Killeen said: “I sensed a little bit of slowing in pace and just kept at my threshold as a gap opened up and it was just ticking the clock down on the last couple of laps.”

Taking third place on the day was Jack Clarkson (Hope Factory Racing) who initially chased the leading duo before making the bronze medal his own.

A dramatic finale in the senior women’s race saw Nikki Harris riding in her new Boels Dolmans CT kit take only her second senior national title.

It looked a completely different outcome as reigning champion Helen Wyman (Kona/FSA Factory Racing) opened up a 22 second advantage by the end of the first lap.

However, Harris bided her time before clawing her way back to the multiple national champion as the pair were locked in an intense final lap battle.

Coming into the finish area Wyman’s chain jammed forcing her to slide into a bush and lose valuable time on her rival. This was enough to allow the 29-year-old from Derby a clear path to take the national title for her new team.

“I was a lot faster in the woods so I used it to get some time and recovery and then I could ride everything else at my own pace. I’m happy with my new team and it’s good to get a win for them.”

Weeks of heavy rain meant that the course led to long running section and half-lap bike changes with a pit area which had a stream of mud flowing through the middle.

Iain Paton (100%me) came from behind to claim victory in the under-23 men’s race earlier in the day which also saw his team-mate Evie Richards ride from the front to claim the inaugural under-23 title.

Mark Donovan (Beacon Wheelers) similarly provided a dominant display to win the junior men’s event.

In just as much mud the previous day 15-year-old Megan James, from Abergavenny, followed in her sister’s footsteps to clinch her first national title while Ben Tulett (Beeline-Gener8) won the under-16s event.

The previous day, Nick Craig (Scott Racing) had been crowned veterans 40-49 winner, while Tim Gould (Zepnat RT) was the over-50s winner. Maddi Smith (Bolsover and Dist CC) was the best of the veteran women.

Didn’t realise this was going on in Shrewsbury, could do with more exposure, would’ve liked to go and watch it.
