Lucy Garner bettered only by Marianne Vos in the Rabobank 7-Dorpenomloop Aalburg

Lucy Garner staked her claim for Commonwealth Games inclusion by finishing second behind Marianne Vos last weekend.

Garner, 19, just lost out to Vos in the Rabobank 7-Dorpenomloop Aalburg race last Saturday. Led out by Giant-Shimano team-mate Sara Mustonen, Garner was narrowly outsprinted by Vos in the closing metres.

Second place in the 121km race was the Midlander’s fifth podium finish of the season so far.

Across the Atlantic, veteran Sharon Laws competed for the first time since winning The Women’s Tour’s mountains classification and finished eighth in The Philadelphia Cycling Classic.

Her UnitedHealthcare team-mate, fellow Briton Hannah Barnes, came home in 27th place.

The British male result on foreign shores in the past week was for 20-year-old Daniel Pearson. The Zappi’s Racing Team rider came 12th in the 160km Trofeo Alcide Degasperi UCI 1.2-ranked race, held in Italy. He was just under two minutes behind winner Michele Gazzarra.
