Mark Cavendish's hopes of riding for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio received a significant boost over the weekend as he placed third in the omnium at the Dudenhofen Grand Prix in Germany (August 28-29), collecting enough points to qualify for this winter's UCI Track World Cup.

Cavendish required just 18 points going into the race after his appearance at the Revolution meet in Derby, where he won the Madison with Bradley Wiggins and placed second in the omnium behind Ed Clancy.

On the outdoor track in Germany, Cavendish placed third in the omnium behind Roger Kluge and Kenny De Ketele, securing the points required. Cavendish now needs to finish 24th or higher in the omnium in one of the 2015-16 Track World Cup events to qualify for the event in Rio.

The Manxman returns to the road this weekend, riding in the Tour of Britain for Etixx-QuickStep (September 6-13), before heading to Richmond, USA, for the World Championships road race at the end of September.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
