Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen has signed for the Pegasus Racing team – currently racing as Fly V – for the 2011 season.

The Australian-based Pegasus Racing outfit has filed an application to the Union Cycliste Internationale for a ProTour licence, and the signing of McEwen, 38, will enhance the squad’s chances of reaching professional cycling’s top flight.

McEwen confirmed the news via his Twitter feed on Thursday afternoon: “Confirmation – I’ve signed w/ Aussie team (title sponsor name tbc) for 2011. Very proud to be a part of it & help to build on it in future.”

McEwen will see out the 2010 season for the Russian Katusha team.

“Hope the UCI accepts the Pro Tour licence app. How good would that be?! But first – giving 100% for Katusha till season end,” McEwen confirmed.

Earlier this week news broke that the Australian squad had signed Canadian Svein Tuft from Garmin-Transitions.

Fly V are one of 14 squads that have put in an application for one of the available eight ProTour licences. The UCI are due to announce the names of the successful applicants on December 10, 2010.

McEwen’s palmares since turning professional with Rabobank in 1996 include 12 Tour de France stage wins and three green jerseys for winning the Tour’s points classification. He’s also won stages of the Giro d’Italia, Paris-Nice, Tour de Suisse, Tour de Romandie, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour Down Under and many more.
