Peter Kennaugh career profile
Peter Kennaugh is the most talented youngster to roll off the Isle of Man production line since his friend and star sprinter Mark Cavendish.

He first rose to prominence on the British junior scene, making a name for himself on the track with World and European championship gold medals, alongside claiming the British National Junior Series title on the road in 2007.

After moving to Italy with the GB Academy the following year, the youngster made a successful transition from domestic junior star to continental contender, winning prestigious amateur classics Trofeo Bastianelli and GP Capodarco in his first year abroad.

Kennaugh further cemented his position in 2009 as one of the sport’s brightest young talents, winning a stage and finishing third in the Baby Giro. He is developing into a strong climber.

Belying his tender years, 20-year-old Kennaugh has already shown that he is more than a match for Britain’s top professionals, finishing second and third in the elite national road race in 2008 and 2009. On this evidence, it was only a matter of time till the Manxman signed his first professional contract which he duly did at the end of 2009 for Team Sky.

Kennaugh switched focus from road to track for the 2012 season with the home Games looming. His debut Olympic performance at the London 2012 Games in the British team pursuit quartet saw him come away with a gold medal and a new world record to add to the world title won earlier in the year in Melbourne.

2013 saw Kennaugh’s focus switch back to the road, as he became a piece of the jigsaw in Team Sky’s bid to retain the Tour de France title; a role he fulfilled with as much acclaim as his efforts on the track.
