Team Sky makes it three stages win out of three in the Italian stage race as Peter Kennaugh moves into overall lead

Peter Kennaugh (Team Sky) won the hilly second stage of the 2014 Settimana Coppi e Bartali in Italy on Friday, and took over the race lead from team-mate Ben Swift.

It’s the third consecutive win for the Sky squad in the race after Swift won the opening stage 1b, and Sky went on to secure the team time trial on Thursday afternoon.

Kennaugh triumphed on a tough stage featuring five passes of Monte Tiffi before a final descent into the finish line at Sogliano al Rubicone. Kennaugh’s fellow escape companion Francesco Bongiorno (Bardiani-CSF) came home for second, with Matteo Rabottini (Neri Sottoli) in third at 48 seconds.

Kennaugh leads Bongiorno overall by 42 seconds, with Sky’s Dario Cataldo in third at one minute.

The UCI 2.1-ranked race concludes on Sunday, March 30.
