Richie Porte tops UCI WorldTour ranking after Paris-Nice win

Richie Porte on podium, Paris-Nice 2013, stage five

Richie Porte is the new leader of the Union Cycliste Internationale WorldTour ranking after winning Paris-Nice on Sunday.

The Australian from Team Sky leads the individual rider ranking ahead of second-placed Tom Jelte Slagter (Blanco), winner of the first counting event of the 2013 season - the Tour Down Under.

Paris-Nice runner-up Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) is in third spot.

The highest-ranked Briton is Geraint Thomas (Sky) in fifth. The Welshman won a stage of the Tour Down Under and placed third overall after a spell in the race lead. The only other Brit in the ranking is Andy Fenn (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) in 51st place with one point.

Sky are the highest-ranked team with 198 points ahead of Blanco with 158 points. Garmin-Sharp are third with 94 points.

Spain tops the ranking-by-nation, with the Netherlands in second and USA third. Great Britain are currently sixth.

The ranking will next be updated by the UCI after Tirreno-Adriatico finishes on Tuesday. The next counting event will then be Milan-San Remo in Italy on March 17.

The UCI's WorldTour Ranking is compiled using a points system, with points awarded for one-day race, tour stage and stage race overall finishing positions for events in the UCI's WorldTour.

The amount of points awarded depends on the ranking of the event. For example, winning the Tour de France overall gives a rider twice as many points as winning the Eneco Tour overall.

Last year's ranking was topped by Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha). British Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins (Sky) finished in second spot.
