Ride the Lights ? is an invitation for a unique preview of Blackpool?s world famous illuminations from the saddle on Tuesday, August 28!

Proof, surely, that Blackpool is bidding for the title, Cycling Capital of Britain!
This year the famous North West seaside resort has already staged a cycling festival, and hosted a premier calendar road race on closed roads.

Now, for the second year in succession, Blackpool?s six-mile promenade goes traffic-free ? with the exception of the trams, which will still be running – to allow cyclists to view the extravaganza. Well, most of it – a few sections are to be kept under wraps for the official switching on three days later.

Over 2000 took part last year, of every age and ability.

The route for this year?s event (taking place between eight and 10pm) has been extended.
It is free to take part, and riders may join in from any point.

Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Tourism at Blackpool Council, said: ?Blackpool is a magical place during the illuminations and Ride the Lights is an amazing opportunity t o see the world-famous lights before they are officially switch on, and soak up what is a lovely family-friendly atmosphere.?

Riders are encouraged to get sponsored for any charity of their choosing. One team is riding for British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Others may choose to rise cash for the Mayor?s ?It?s a Knock Out appeal?, which raises money for the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals Fund.
