Sarah Storey career profile

A multi-medallist in swimming at the Paralympic Games, a chronic ear infection prompted Sarah Storey to turn to cycling in 2005, despite being a beginner on two wheels.

Just three years later, she was selected to ride the Beijing Paralympics, and rode brilliantly to gold in the individual pursuit and road time trial. Her time in the latter would have been good enough for eighth in the Olympic final.

She was also crowned the 3km national track pursuit champion in 2008, beating able-bodied riders, and defended her title the year later.

In 2010, she rode for the England team at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli, and won gold in both the road race and time trial in the World Para-Cycling Championships for the second year running.

Her hopes of making history in 2012 by being the first cyclist ever to compete at both the Olympics and Paralympics edged closer after a strong display at the 2011 Track World Cup round in Manchester, in which she took gold in the team pursuit along with Wendy Houvenaghel and Jo Rowsell. Their time, 3-19.757, was good enough for the second fastest time ever.

Storey missed out on the final selection for the women’s team pursuit at the Olympic Gamess, and immediately switched attention to the track and road events at the Paralympics – where she won four gold medals.

On the road, Storey has performed well in 2013, in UCI events across Europe and the globe, which has led to her gaining a contract for Madison Boot Out Breast Cancer in 2014.
