Bradley Wiggins blitzes Folsom individual time trial and takes overall race lead

Sir Bradley Wiggins (Sky) won the stage two individual time trial in the Tour of California on Monday to take the overall race lead.

Wiggins clocked a blistering 23 minutes and 18 seconds on the flat 20.1-kilometre course in Folsom in a perfect display of riding against the clock to take his first victory of the season.

Australian Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) had put down the early marker, despite nursing injuries sustained after crashing on the previous day’s opening stage. When Wiggins passed through the half-way intermediate time check, he was 19 seconds faster than Dennis.

By the finish, Wiggins had increased his advantage to 44 seconds. Only Taylor Phinney (BMC) looked like he could challenge Wiggins, but he surprisingly posted a time down on both the Briton and Dennis’s times at the split, and finished 52 seconds adrift of Wiggins.

Wiggins’s stage-winning margin means that he relieves Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) of the overall race lead. Dennis is second at 44 seconds, with Phinney third at 52 seconds.

Though the majority of the stage was run off without incident, Belkin leader Laurens Ten Dam was caught up with another rider in a crash after finishing, leaving him with a ripped skinsuit and a cut left leg.

Stage three on Tuesday hands the riders their first mountain stage of the race, from San Jose to Mount Diablo State Park.
