Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) posted the fourth fastest time in today’s Tour de France prologue in London. Widely tipped to win the Tour opener on home territory, Wiggins put everything he had into an amazing ride but it was not enough for the win against the very best in the world.

Time trial specialist Fabian Cancellara (CSC) beat Wiggins by 23 seconds to take the win and be the first to wear this year’s yellow leader’s jersey. Andreas Kloden (Astana) and George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) were second and third respectively.

David Millar (Saunier Duval) was Britain’s second highest-placed rider in 13th spot, 33 seconds behind Cancellara. This, of course, means that Britain has two riders sat inside the top 15 in the overall classification.

Welshman Geraint Thomas (Barloworld) made a stunning Tour debut, finishing in 45th place – the highest place of any rider from his team. Thomas is the youngest rider in this year’s race.
