Vincenzo Nibali turns to his lawyers in light of Matt Brammeier and Tony Martin's tweets after the cancellation of the Tirreno-Adriatico mountain stage

Vincenzo Nibali is consulting his lawyers over tweets made by Matt Brammeier and Tony Martin in the aftermath of the stage cancellation at Tirreno-Adriatico, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Astana claimed they could pull Nibali from the Giro d’Italia in May in case organiser RCS Sport makes similar decisions to cancel the summit finishes if the forecast looks bad, like it did on Sunday.

But Brammeier, who was riding at Paris-Nice for Dimension Data, took to Twitter to say that Nibali should “stay at home and skip the who season”, calling the Italian champion a “narrow-minded, selfish moron”.

Etixx-Quick Step‘s Martin agreed with Brammeier’s tweet, replying: “Matt, you’re a legend! I couldn’t say it better!”

Nibali says he agreed with the decision to cancel the stage for rider safety, but says he regrets there was no plan B for the general classification contenders to fight it out.

“I simply turned to my lawyer,” Nibali said about the Brammeier and Martin tweets.

Nibali is not the only Italian to consider legal action over a tweet, with Fabio Aru bringing a case against Lotto-Soudal’s Greg Henderson for comments he made online about the biological passport.

La Gazzetta reports that Nibali was seen shaking hands with RCS Sport manager Mauro Vegni – the man in charge of May’s Giro d’Italia at Monday’s stage six in Tirreno-Adriatico.

Only a bunch of sad whinging poms would fail to realise that Nibali is one of greatest champions cycling has ever seen. Only six people have ever won all three grand tours and only two tour champions since Bernard Hinault who last won in 1985 have also won a monument (the other being Andy Schleck) and you losers who probably wouldn’t know what an Italian or Spanish HC climb feels like if it hit you in the face think you can take the piss out of one of these champions? Give me a break. Nibali has more fans and respect in the bunch than most others anyway so it doesn’t really matter what you ignoramuses think. Enjoy riding in the rain over the pimples you call climbs 😉

Never met Nibali, of course and he might well be a nice guy with family and friends, but his more recent pronouncements make him look like a total knob.

Nibili is just a bitter cheating rider who was !!given !! The 2014 tour after the favourites crashed out. Hey Nibili why don’t you sue me as well for speaking the truth!!

He’s not only a narrow minded selfish moron but also a childish imbecile lacking common sense. If he’s suing for libel then he have to prove he has suffered serious harm by the remark, which is ridiculously silly and waste of everyone’s time. He can suck up the pain flying up the Col du Tourmalet but can’t take a little bit of banter.

  • ummm…

wow, Aru and Nibali insist upon making themselves look like greasy arsewholes. If I were either of them, especially Nibali I’d keep my yap closed, after the “motopacing”. Can they sue their own poor choices, or their team for making them look like fools. What is the damage here now? It would be nice if he didn’t go to the Giro, why is that a worry?

Steady now David or his lawyer will be even busier.

  • David Bassett

Well his lawyer will be busy if every one was to say what they think of the cheating lying chid of unmarried parents.
