NFTO lead series after first two rounds of men's event, Archibald tops women's leaderboard.

NFTO lead the Pearl Izumi Tour Series despite being beaten by Rapha Condor-JLT and Madison Genesis in the opening two rounds of the series in Stoke-on-Trent last night.

The fledgling UCI-ranked squad, managed by Sean Yates, narrowly finished second in the opening team time trial and then placed there in the evening criterium. Their result in the latter was helped by a fine solo win by Jon Mould, who was part of the dominant UK Youth team which scooped the overall title in 2013. Mould attacked from a breakaway group of 10 riders early on, and won by nearly 50 seconds.

Rapha’s victory against the clock was their first team victory in the event since the penultimate round of the 2012 series which, coincidentally, came in a team time trial in Stoke. Madison’s win was their first ever in the event.

The squad who has the lowest culmulative score for their first three riders across the line wins each round, although individual glory is still on offer.

In the opening round of the Matrix GP Series, Katie Archibald put her pursuiting skills to good use as she lapped the field en route to a brilliant solo victory.

She won the first sprint after five laps, which led to a front group of 20 being formed. By the time of the second sprint she had already gained a sizeable lead over her rivals; one she never relinquished in the closing kilometres.

Round two of the men’s event takes place in Barrow tomorrow (Thursday), the women return in Peterborough on May 20.
