Zdenek Stybar is recovering in hospital after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his lips subsequent to crashing heavily during the sprint at the end of Thursday's Eneco Tour stage four in the Netherlands.

His Omega Pharma-QuickStep team said on Friday that Stybar required internal and external stitching of his lips, and had three teeth replaced. Stybar was removed from the crash scene by stretcher and with a neck brace. Subsequent scans showed that there were no breaks or fractures.

The Czech rider was in fifth position overall at the start of the day after winning stage two, but was forced to withdraw due to the severity of his injuries. He will remain in hospital throughout Friday to recover from his surgery.

The 28-year-old cyclo-cross world champion has taken to social media to thank fans and well-wishers, and post up a photo of himself watching the Eneco Tour on television and drinking coffee via a syringe.

Former Associate Editor

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
