Davide Rebellin career profile
Davide Rebellin is one of Italy's most successful one-day specialists ever. Results came early for the man from San Bonifacio; wins in San Sebastián and Züri-Metzgete in only his second season as a professional was an impressive feat.
Renowned as one of the most tactically astute riders in the peloton, Rebellin (also known as Tintin) enjoyed the most successful years of his career at the German Gerolsteiner squad.
A Classics triple of Amstel Gold, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2004 was a remarkable feat and the apotheosis of his career.
Rebellin has lost some of his explosiveness as he has got older, but makes up for this with his tactical nous. He won Paris-Nice in 2008, not by being the strongest rider in the race, but attacking Robert Gesink on a dangerous descent, on which he knew the Dutchman would be vulnerable.
Rebellin's career has not been without controversy, however. In 2004, allegations surfaced regarding video footage apparently involving Rebellin and several others discussing the use of performance enhancing drugs during the 2001 Giro d'Italia. No charges were brought and he was later exonerated.
He won Flèche Wallonne once again in 2009 for the third time but soon after tested positive for CERA from a retrospective test dating from the 2008 Olympics, in which Rebellin was second.
