Wiggins' Giro stage 5 stats: What an effort

Britain's Bradley Wiggins (Garmin-Slipstream) had a second stellar day in the mountains yesterday during the 2009 Giro d'Italia.

Wiggins put in a mammoth effort to stay in contact with the lead group as they traversed the Dolomites, and now you can see exactly how much effort he put in. Wiggins' full set of Garmin Edge GPS stats from stage five have been published on his team's website, and the figures are impressive.

The 29-year-old rider completed the tough 125km stage averaging 23.6mph, with an average power output of 255 watts. His maximum power output peaked at an electrifying 912 watts.

Known for his seemingly effortless spinning on the track, Wiggins pedalled smoothly throughout the day at an average cadence of 83 pedal revolutions a minute, with a maximum of 148 rpm.

Wiggins finished the stage in 22nd place - 13 places higher than Lance Armstrong - one minute and 47 seconds behind stage winner Denis Menchov (Rabobank).

Thanks to his performance in the mountains coupled with his squad's second place in the opening team time trial, Wiggins is now aiming for a top 20 place overall when the race concludes in Rome on May 31.
