Thomas Lofkvist career profile
Sweden’s Thomas Lofkvist began his career on a mountain bike, but made the switch to a full-time professional on the road in 2004 joining the French Française des Jeux team.His prodigious talent was clear from the beginning and he won the Circuit de la Sarthe in his first year as a professional at the tender age of just 20.
Despite an early flurry of results, that included 12th overall in the 2005 Paris-Nice and 61st in his first Tour de France, Lofkvist struggled to get the race wins that many predicted he would.
A move to Columbia in 2008 followed and it proved to be the making of the young Swede.
Lofkvist enjoyed a spell in the young riders’ white jersey at the Tour de France (on the way to 41st overall) and took fifth at the Tour of Switzerland. He was also second overall at the Tour of Germany, helping his then-teammate Linus Gerdemann to the overall win.
The Swede took his biggest and most impressive career win to date in 2009, winning the Monte Paschi Eroica and taking sixth at Flèche Wallonne.
Lofkvist, a strong all-rounder with no evident weakness in any area, will certainly be one to watch for the future.
