Track Cycling World Championships 2009: Preview

The cream of international track talent will descend on Pruszkow, Poland, between March 25-29 for the 2009 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Great Britain goes into the world championships as the outright favourites in pretty much every discipline.

Having virtually cleaned up at last year's Worlds in Manchester, and then again at the Olympic Games in Beijing, all eyes will be on Great Britain as the country to beat.

Unfortunately, the GB squad took a serious blow when Chris Hoy was forced to withdraw from the worlds due to injuries sustained during the Copenhagen world cup round - meaning that he'll be unable to defend his position as sprint and Keirin world champion. Can one of the other Brit sprinters step up to take his place at the top?

British Cycling announced the GB squad selection for the 2009 Track Worlds on Monday, March 16. The full list or riders is below.

Current world champions are automatically guaranteed a place in this year's event, as are the current track world cup champions. Other places are calculated by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) based on each country's performance at qualifying track events.

You can find a full list of current world, world cup and Olympic champions in our Dummies' Guide to Track Racing, which also includes information on each of the disciplines.

Cycling Weekly will be covering the 2009 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in full: online and in the magazine
