Stijn Devolder career profile
Stijn Devolder’s biggest claim to fame is his consecutive victories in the 2008 and 2009 Tour of Flanders. Both events were won in similar style, with Devolder launching a late, lone attack which he then carried off until the finish.Born in West Flanders, Devolder has always been closely linked to team manager Dirk Demol, who was his coach as an amateur and then both in his first big team, US Postal/Discovery Channel and again at Quick Step, which he joined in 2008.
Although a Classics specialist first and foremost, Devolder is a skilled time triallist when the going is relatively uncomplicated and flat and as a result had a crack at the overall in three-week stage races both in the Tour of Spain in 2007 and again in the Tour de France 2008. Although he led the Vuelta for a day in 2007, his Tour bid failed miserably and he abandoned after two weeks.
Devolder is nicknamed ‘Briek’ in his team because he hails from the same region as the legendary Flandrian Briek Schotte and apparently has a similarly tactiturn character and dour appearance.
A difficult 2010 saw Devolder win only on home soil; he took the Tour of Belgium, and both the national road race and time trial championships, the first rider ever to do so.
