BRITISH SPRINTERS HEAD TO MAJORCA

Britain's track sprinters hit the roads of Majorca this week as they start preparing for March’s track World Championships in Poland.

”It’s the start of the build-up for Poland and the opportunity for the younger riders who are coming onto the team to have a bit of a meet and greet session without too many outside distractions,” said national sprint coach Iain Dyer.

“It’s pretty much an annual thing, about mid-November. It’s all about a steady week on the road, putting in decent training rides away from the British weather, with gym sessions slotted in as well.”

“This way we top up their anaerobic capacity and keep everybody is ticking over. It’s bread-and-butter training which gives you a nice bounce-back, a feel of building up pre-season. Most of the squad will be going, except for Chris Hoy, who’s still on holiday at that time.”

“We’ll be doing rides of up to three hours and we’ll be heading for the hills inland in Majorca. People think sprinters never do any climbing - that’s not true.”

After the success at the Manchester world cup, where the sprinters secured many of the qualification points they need, none of the top sprinters will be taking part in the World Cups prior to the final round in Copenhagen on February 13th-15th.

Enough points have been amassed across the board to ensure qualification for the World Championships to allow the team to book-end their build-up with the first and last World Cups, prior to the World Championships in Poland from March 25th - 29th. Or as Dyer puts it, “we can afford to be a little choosy.”

“At Copenhagen they should be at 90 to 95 percent of their form before the final taper-down towards Poland - the next big target for everybody.”
