Igor Anton career profile
With the notable exception of Alberto Contador, Igor Anton is arguably Spain’s most promising up-and-coming young climber. A keen fan of Marco Pantani, like the Italian, Anton is a poor time triallist. But in the mountains it's a different story altogether.Nicknamed Fuji because that was the type of bike he first started to race and ride on - aged nine - Anton’s biggest win as a pro so far came in the 2006 Tour of Spain. He succeeded in dropping the opposition on the toughest ascent of the race, to the observatory of Calar Alto, for a classic victory.
In June 2008, Anton charged away on the second stage of the Tour of Switzerland to take both the win and - briefly - the lead. He finally finished third overall.
At the Vuelta, Anton crashed out on the descent preceding the Angliru - his big target of the season - and broke his collarbone.
Anton won stages 4 and 11 in the 2010 Vuelta.
