Shanaze Reade career profile
Predominantly a BMX rider, Shanaze Reade is at the age of 19, already a three-time World champion in the discipline.
Reade began racing from an early age at the Tipkinder Park in Crewe. Reade rapidly progressed partly as a result of racing with the men in the National BMX series and is known for her ferocious accelerations from the start ramp.
Reade began to dabble in track racing in early 2007, when she finished second in the team sprint event at the Manchester round of the Track World Cup. Only a month later, Reade took a World title in the team sprint, repeating the feat in 2008.
The rider from Crewe was a hot favourite to become Olympic champion in the BMX event in Beijing, but crashed in the final, clipping Anne-Caroline Chausson’s wheel and losing out on a chance of a medal.
Equally strong both on the track and on the bumps and jumps of the BMX course, Reade is one Britain’s brightest prospects for a medal at London 2012.
