CATFORD HILL CLIMB
With the summer months already a distant memory, hill climb season is upon us. Yorks Hill in Surrey will once again play host to the annual Catford CC Classic Hill Climb on Sunday October 12.

Formed back in 1886, the event is, according to the club, the oldest hill climb in the world. With sections of 25%, this is one for the pure climbers.

The record of 1:47.6 still stands, set by Phil Mason in some 25 years ago. Last year’s winner Dan Fleeman, came within one second of beating Mason’s time, but will not be riding this year.

With £800 worth of prize funds available on the day, it’s certainly worth a go. More details can be found at www.catfordcc.co.uk

RUSSELL MILES AHEAD
Russell Downing dominated the Premier Calendar series this season, winning all but three of the events on the calendar. The final series standings reflect this, with Russell 270 points ahead of brother, Dean.

Final standings:
1. Russell Downing (Pinarello RT CandiTV) 955
2. Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Recycling) 685
3. Evan Oliphant (Plowman Craven) 502.5
4. Simon Richardson (Plowman Craven) 483
5. Rob Hayles (Halfords Bikehut) 462
6. Kristian House (Rapha Condor Recycling) 350
7. Rob Partridge (Rapha Condor Recycling) 334
8. Marcin Bialoblocki (Sports Beans) 306
9. Matthew Higgins (Corley Cycles) 269
10. Peter Williams (Pinarello RT CandiTV) 261

IBBO’S CAKE QUEST
Entries for Ibbo’s Cake Quest Bike Ride on Sunday October 12 are still open.

Four rides are available on the day, from Fairy cakes (15km), to Jaffa cakes (60km), Carrot cakes (110km) and Fruitcakes (150km).

All proceeds go to the John Ibbotson Fund. The ride starts at Walton on the Hill Community Centre in Surrey. See www.johnibbotsonfund.com to enter.

CLIMBING DATABASE
If you’re looking for cols to climb abroad or even in the UK, there is a new online climbing database detailing the world’s toughest ascents.

The site features details such as length, average gradient, user difficulty ratings as well as Google Earth profiles of every climb.

See www.climbbybike.com to access the database.

HOW TO RIDE AS FAST AS THE BRITISH TRACK RIDERS
Cyclingweekly.co.uk spotted a survey on the website of a French website recently about what the other nations have to do in order to match the British success on the track.

The possible answers were: 1) ride with a Scottish kilt; 2) to buy out the organisers of the Olympics; 3) eat roast beef and mint sauce; 4) ride the track backwards so you’re riding on the right.

The results? Riding on the right was a close winner from, you’ve guessed it, eating rosbeef

DAVE RAYNER PARTY
Places are still available for the South Western ‘Soul Review’, organised in aid of the Dave Rayner Fund on Saturday October 4.

Live music (ranging from soul to rock and Motown) and plenty of food will be on offer at Fetcham Village Hall (KT22 9QR) from 7:30pm.

Cheques (made payable to SWRC for £12) should be sent to Geoff Redhead, 11 Hillier Road, SW11 6AX.
