THURSDAY'S BRITISH NEWS ROUND-UP


ACADEMY TEAM FOR THURINGEN-RUNDFAHRT
Ben Swift, Jonny Bellis, Alex Dowsett, Johnny McEvoy, Mark McNally and Peter Kennaugh will be the six-man Great Britain team for the Thuringen-Rundfahrt under-23 stage race in Germany (June 10-15). Last year Ian Stannard was fourth overall and had three top ten placings, including third on stage one.

MANNING AND STANNARD IN LUXEMBOURG
Paul Manning was 52nd, 23 seconds behind the winner Fabian Cancellara, in the 2.4-kilometre prologue at the Tour of Luxembourg. His Landbouwkrediet team-mate Ian Stannard was 94th at 38 seconds. The race runs until Sunday. In the event’s 72-year history there has been one British winner, Vin Denson in 1965.

POOLEY IN CANADA
Going into the final stage of the Tour du Grand Montreal, Britain’s Emma Pooley (Specialized) lies 44th overall, 49 seconds behind the leader Suzanne De Goede of Holland. Rachel Heal, riding for Team Tibco, is 53rd, a further five seconds back. Pooley was 25th in yesterday’s 3.5-kilometre time trial, which was won by Judith Arndt. Today’s final stage has a hill-top finish.

PINARELLO RIDERS IN NORWAY
Pinarello’s Malcolm Elliott was seventh, with Russell Downing tenth, in the 145-kilometre opening stage of the Ringerike GP in Norway. Thomas Murray and Peter Williams are the other two riders in the Pinarello team. The stage was won by a Dutch rider, Bjorn Hoebon, who finished seven seconds ahead of the bunch.

FROOME IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY
Britain’s newest recruit, Chris Froome, who swapped his Kenyan racing licence for a British one in April, rides for Barloworld in the three-day Euskal Bizikleta, which starts tomorrow (Friday).

BRAILSFORD’S DATE WITH THE MEDIA
British Cycling’s performance director, Dave Brailsford, will meet the British media when he is the special guest at a dinner hosted by the Sports Journalists’ Association in London on June 26.
