FUNERAL OF IVOR MORRIS

The funeral of Ivor John Morris, founder of the London Fire Brigade CC, who died on January 1, aged 80, will be on Monday, January 14, in the main chapel at Eastbourne Crematorium in East Sussex at 10am.

Morris was a star of Herne Hill track in the post war years becoming NCU national junior champion in 1946.

He narrowly missed selection for the 1948 London Olympic Games, taking third in the selection race.

He was a fan of Continental road racing which was banned by t he NCU on the public roads of Britain. So he joined the rebel organisation of the British League of Racing Cyclists to ride massed start events and was expelled from the NCU for doing so, as where many in those troubled days.

Morris married Olive Lincoln who racing for the Polhill RC, one of the first teams of English women to race in France.

Morris himself raced with some success in the League, before retiring from racing in 1951.
He joined the London Fire Brigade in and in 1972 and formed the London Fire Brigade Cycling Club.

The club promoted events for the then Greater London Council, including a world fireman’s championship and several national firemen’s events.

They also produced world fireman’s champions in Ray Palin on the road and Mike Bell off-road.

Morris spent the remaining years of his life living in Bexhill and passed away in The Conquest Hospital, Hastings.

• The service at Eastbourne Crematorium, Hide Hollow, Lagney, Eastbourne, East Sussex (BN23 8AE) will be followed by a reception at 11.30am at The Red Lion Pub, Hooe Village. TN33 9ET.
