KNARESBOROUGH RT FOLDS

DECLINING membership and a lack of event organisers has forced Knaresborough Racing Team to close, it was decided at the club's AGM last month.

Formed in 1992 by the late Keith Thompson, the club has seen hundreds of cyclists from across the area take up the sport, and even when Thompson died seven years ago new leadership looked set to continue his legacy.

Former chairman of the North Yorkshire club, Jim Laycock said: “Keith had a unique way of being able to make a mere-mortal cyclist dig deeper into his reserves and achieve more. He would quite often be seen at the start, finish & on top of the biggest climb shouting words of encouragement to all and everyone riding within his many, many self organised racing events.”

The remaining club funds are set to be divided among two good causes, with £1,000 going to a charity selected by Mr Thompson’s family, while the majority of the funds will be donated to the Dave Rayner Fund in an effort to continue with his commitment to helping and encouraging cycling, especially to the younger generation.

Meanwhile, the Keith Thompson Memorial Ride will take place as always at 9am from the Knaresborough Bus Station Car Park on Sunday November 18.
