The ancient London market of Smithfield will play host to a new night-time criterium on June 23 - the Smithfield Nocturne.

Taking place just a fortnight before the Tour de France starts in the captial, the organisers of the event are promising a clash of star ProTour riders from the continent versus the 'best of British' in an elite criterium.

As well as the racing, a whole evening of cycling entertainment is being planned. Festivities start at 5pm and run through until 10pm - and entry is completely free for spectators.

Other events include a point-to-point messenger race strewn with challenges, a junior race and our particular favourite, a folding bike race complete with Le Mans-style running start.
