RECKLESS DRIVER FINED JUST £800
The driver who killed a female cyclist has been fined just £800 for ‘careless driving’.
The verdict was announced a day after MPs failed to use their last chance to improve the Road Safety Bill, now close to becoming law. Cycling campaigners and the CTC fear the new bill will fail to solve problems caused by reckless drivers, because of differences in treatment between individual cases.
Brenda Kerry is the third member of Exeter CTC section to be killed on the road in recent years and the second in 18 months. She was killed when the 20-year-old tractor driver tried to overtake her, leaving only 50cm between his wheels and the side of the road. His trailer was hooked on the handlebars, throwing her into the road causing her to sustain fatal injuries.
