Charly Wegelius has been forced to abandon the Tour of Spain on Wednesday after he crashed on stage five of the race from Plasencia to Covatilla.

The Liquigas pro hit the deck after around 20 kilometres of racing, made it over the first of the four classified climbs of the day, the first category Puerto de Piornal, but according to the race website then abandoned after 90 kilometres of racing.

First medical reports say the Briton had suffered multiple cuts and abrasions in the crash. No other riders, apparently, were involved.

This was Wegelius’ third participation in the Tour of Spain. He was one of two Britons taking part - the other is David Millar.

Overall, the race is currently being led by Norwegian Thor Hushovd. However, this seems certain to change after Wednesday’s high mountain stage.
