King honoured by Queen

British Cycling executive director Peter King has been made Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's birthday honours. Former National Manager of the Paralympic Team Tony Yorke will receive an OBE.

Peter King served British Cycling as the CEO for 12 years, helping to position the organisation as one of the most successful sporting bodies in the UK. Tony Yorke held many successful posts with British Cycling since 1979 and helped bring Paralympic Cycling governance into the Union Cycliste Internationale.

“It is a humbling experience to find myself following in the footsteps of so many great athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers who have been honoured similarly in previous years," King said after the announcement on Saturday.

"It was my privilege to lead British Cycling for 12 years and work with the hundreds of volunteers across the country who make our sport happen every day of every week and create opportunities for our athletes to rise to stardom.

"At British Cycling I was fortunate to build a terrific team of loyal, dedicated and professional staff," King continued. "I had constant support of successive committed and knowledgeable Board members, led by the hardest working President in British sport.

"I was also able to call on the energy and enthusiasm of thousands of volunteer officials and club coaches all over the country, all of whom have contributed to the re-incarnation of the sport of cycling in the UK. To all of these wonderful people I dedicate this honour."

British cyclists who were given titles in th Queen's New Year's honours list attended an investiture at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. Triple 2008 Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy received his knighthood, and Bradley Wiggins and David Brailsford picked up their CBEs.
