Kennaugh misses out on Girobio lead

Great Britain Under-23 Academy rider Pete Kennaugh has missed out on taking the leader's jersey at the Girobio by just two seconds.

Kennaugh won Sunday's third stage of the Italian under-27s stage race and was hoping to celebrate his 20th birthday today with the leader's jersey. He gave it everything during the 16.4km time trial, pulling back a massive 33 seconds but Cesare Benedetti (UC Bergamasca) managed to hang on by the skin of his teeth and kept the race lead by two seconds.

24 year-old Australian Richie Porte won the time trial, beating under-23 world TT champion Adriano Malore.

The nine-day Girobio heads into the Dolomites on Tuesday for the 155.5km fifth stage from Paderno del Grappa to Feltre.
