Tour Series: Stoke-on-Trent preview

CandiTV: back to school

CandiTV visit Stoke schools

You could forgive Russell Downing for wanting to lie down on the sofa and watch trashy movies all day Monday after his recent frantic weekend of racing.

Victories on consecutive days in the Smithfield Nocturne and Ryedale GP, together with two mid-week Tour Series races, meant the Rotherham man had travelled 1,000 miles in the team car in the space of a week. Surely Downing would be putting his feet up and taking it easy for a day?

Think again. Duty calls and the prolific winner was, together with equally the well-travelled Malcolm Elliott and CandiTV team-mates Peter Williams and Simon Holt, visiting schools in Stoke-on-Trent promoting tonight’s [June 16] Tour Series race.

The team spent the day visiting four schools in the area, mustering support for CandiTV-Marshalls Pasta, who are the designated home team for round seven.

“I turned my phone off all day Monday and slept for 12 hours on Monday night,” said Downing, explaining why Cycling Weekly was having trouble contacting him.

CandiTV face a rampant Halfords Bikehut squad: their win at Southport was their third on the trot and takes them to within a single point of the blue leaders’ jerseys, worn by CandiTV for all but one round.

A win for Madison tonight would put them top of the pile, while Rapha-Condor should be back to full strength with half the squad returning from the Tour de Beauce in Canada, where the team landed two stage wins, courtesy of Darren Lapthorne and Matt Cronshaw.
