Sir Chris Hoy has been given the 2009 Edinburgh Award in recognition of his triple gold medal winning performance at the Beijing Olympic Games last year.

The Edinburgh Award is an 'annual award to honour an outstanding individual who has made a positive impact on the city and gained national and international recognition for Edinburgh'.

Sir Chris received the award on Tuesday morning.

Sir Chris is only the third person to receive the award since its inception in 2007. Authors JK Rowling and Ian Rankin won the award in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

As part of the award, Sir Chris will have his handprints embedded in stone outside the Edinburgh city chambers.
