Emma Pooley soloed to victory in the GP de Plouay this weekend, breaking away for a spectacular 45 kilometre move that netted the Cervélo pro her second World Cup victory of the season.

The Olympic time trial silver medallist never had a lead of more than 1 minute 20 seconds. But despite a ferocious chase by the Australian team and a strong lone counter-attack by Nicole Cooke, Pooley stayed away for a spectacular win.

“It was my attack that stuck, but all of my team-mates had been trying to get away,” Pooley told Cycling Weekly. “It was a close thing, ideally I’d have had about three or four minutes to play with, so I wasn’t sure I was going to win until close to the end. But fortunately it worked out.”

Dutchwoman Marianne Vos (DSB) finished second, and now moves into the overall lead of the World Cup.

Plouay is Pooley’s latest success in a year which has also seen her take the GP Montreal, the Grande Boucle Feminine and the GP Costa Etrusca. It is the third World Cup victory of her career.

See this week's Cycling Weekly for more on Pooley's win.
