Lucky seven for Urquhart in Rudy Project

Scotland's Duncan Urquhart won the seventh round of the RTTC-Rudy Project Time Trial Series over a 29-mile course at Llandeilo in Dyfed, Wales, on Sunday.

The Endura Racing rider clocked 1-03-06 for the rolling course, and took victory by 1-22 from fellow Scot Colin Robertson (Team Velo Ecosse), while former series champion Richard Prebble (Candi TV-Marshalls Pasta) was third, another 11 seconds back.

Urquhart's victory was all the more impressive because he has only been back riding his bike in the last four weeks, after missing much of the season because of a broken collar bone.

He crashed heavily in the Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar Series race in June, and needed surgery to put his shoulder back together.

He had previously been targeting selection for the Scotland team in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, next year, but thought his hopes had been dashed because of his crash.

But while the road season may be over, Urquhart reckons the selectors may also consider him for a place in the team if he seconds two top-three places in the Rudy Project Series.

The Scot, a soldier with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, said: "I was really pleased and quite surprised to win the event, because I'm only just really getting back into my riding.

"I was surprised to win the event. I was just wanting to gauge how well I was going, and was hoping to get in the top three," he added. "I looked at my speed and given that it was raining and was a really rolling course, I averaged 27mph which I was satisfied with."

Other results in the penultimate round of the series included a win for VC St Raphael rider Sarah Storey in the 18-mile women's event with 40-58, while Ian Cook (Calder Clarion) was top veteran rider with 39-26.
