British sprint ace Mark Cavendish won the most races in 2009, with his Columbia-HTC squad taking top honours for professional wins by team.

Columbia-HTC's dominance of the racing scene was so complete that riders from the US squad placed first, second and third in the list of 2009 'wins by rider' compiled by Cycle Sport magazine.

Cavendish, Andre Greipel and Edvald Boasson Hagen won 23, 20 and 12 races respectively.

In total, Columbia-HTC won 78 races throughout the season, with Saxo Bank in second place with 43 victories and Garmin-Slipstream's late season surge of wins giving them 26 appearances on the top step of the podium.

Italy tops Cycle Sport's table for wins by country (95), with Spain (77) and France (65) coming second and third. Britain is sixth in the list.

Cycle Sport magazine independently compiles statistics during every racing season to keep track of the riders and teams with the most wins. The full breakdown appears in the January 2010 issue of Cycle Sport, on sale in all good newsagents now.
